Dark Magnetic Filament on the Sun

Well, that's interesting. From Spaceweather.com.

A dark magnetic filament is stretching around the southeastern limb of the sun. ... Magnetic filaments on the sun have a tendency to erupt. This one is attached to sunspot 1112. Does that make it more--or less--stable? No one knows. The magnetohydrodynamics of sunspots is so complex, not even the most powerful supercomputers on Earth can predict when they will explode. Readers with solar telescopes are encouraged to monitor this region for unexpected developments.

Re: Dark Magnetic Filament on the Sun

GREAT FILAMENT: The biggest thing on the sun today is not a sunspot--and it's not even close. A dark magnetic filament 20 times wider than a typical sunspot is meandering across the sun's southern hemisphere. It's so big, astrophotographer Pete Lawrence of Selsey, UK, had to stitch together several pictures to display the entire structure:

Wow!  This could cause a rip in the space-time continuum!

Or allow dark entities to come through realm boundaries that have split apart.

Or not.

Great picture, though, UC!

Re: Dark Magnetic Filament on the Sun

Yeah, there's some interesting stuff at that website. For some reason I'm obsessed with this magnetic filament. 400,000 km across. Fascinating. I have no idea if it would deadly or not, but sure looks big. How's that for profound and poetic? Pardon my sarcasm...

A vast filament of magnetism is cutting across the sun's southern hemisphere today. Run a finger along the golden-brown line in this extreme UV image from the Solar Dynamics Observatory and your digit will have traveled more than 400,000 km:

And another picture for today:

Re: Dark Magnetic Filament on the Sun

On March 10th, 2006 NASA's website issued a solar storm warning, since that time NASA continues to predict unusually strong solar activity for the coming solar maximum 2011-2013. Like hurricanes on Earth, solar storms are just as hard to forecast, if not impossible to accurately forecast how strong it may become. It goes without saying that we could have a repeat performance of the 1889 solar storm or even stronger. In 2010, the sun has already had two large CME and 2012 is still a ways away.

Old news I know..the ones that are digging themselves undergound to avoid the CME's will end up someday discovered living in a cave near Shamballah with impressive views on technology...they will be very white.  Back to the Future....order your Glen Beck rations now!  What, me worry? You think the song, Stardust Memories just came out of nowhere?

Check this one out:  http://spaceweather.com/images2010/06de … 314f1011s6

Was friggin' huge!

UPDATE! The "mega-filament" described below has just erupted. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory made a must-see movie of the epic blast. The eruption does not appear to be geoeffective; Earth-effects might be limited to pretty pictures.

MEGA-FILAMENT: A magnetic filament snaking around the sun's SE limb just keeps getting longer. The portion visible today stretches more than 700,000 km--a full solar radius. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory took this picture during the early hours of Dec. 6th:
